Cleanbill Historical Comparison Report – Dermatologist Listings

On 2 July 2024, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released data showing the total out-of-pocket costs paid by Australians when visiting specialists in 2022-23. It also showed how much these out-of-pocket costs had increased over the previous decade.

We were intrigued. The AIHW data showed the aggregated amounts paid by Australians, but we wanted to know how that translated to the cost of individual appointments.

Luckily, Cleanbill’s precursor, MindTheGap, collected billing data for 165 dermatology clinics across Australia in March 2017 that were still operating as of March 2025. By comparing the cost of visiting these clinics in 2017 against the cost of visiting the same clinics in 2025, we could show how much the average dermatologist appointment had increased in price over the last 8 years.

So, that’s exactly what we’ve done.

This Report compares MindTheGap’s 2017 dermatology clinics’ pricing data with the pricing data for the same clinics in 2025 to show how much the cost of a dermatologist visit has increased in the past 8 years. It also refers back to the AIHW data to see whether this data matches the trends the AIHW is observing in specialist costs as a whole.
